The Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre (MNC) has conducted seminal research into psychosis, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders for over 20 years. Prof. Christos Pantelis and his team were the first to describe progressive changes of the brain at the onset of a psychotic episode and have extensively investigated the neuropsychological and neuroimaging correlates of early psychosis. This work has led to the establishment of a unique resource of more than 5,000 multimodal brain scans that continue to reveal valuable insights about the structural and functional changes to the brain associated with mental illness. The research at MNC has influenced the modern conceptualisation of schizophrenia as a neuropsychiatric condition whose onset and course can potentially be predicted by examining early (progressive) alterations to brain structure and function.
